Joe’s thoughts

19 May

We got another Derby correct. And then we got a little lucky with our winnings. Those that followed last week’s suggested wager received over $1,800 for the $100 investment! Onward.

Saturday’s Preakness Stakes offers little to the casual fan other than can Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome continue on his pursuit of the Triple Crown. He’ll need a victory Saturday and is expected to do so at very short odds.

One is better off taking some of their Derby winnings and having some summer cocktails while just watching this year’s Preakness. What started last summer and I expect will be a big hit this year is the concept of lower-alcohol beverages and drinks.

Three that we shared last summer were: Barefoot Sparkling Refresh Wines which come in a variety of flavors and are 9% alcohol; Skinny Girl Cocktails are pre-mixed and offer lower alcohol along with less calories; and St. Germaine (20% alcohol) and club soda over ice with some lemon. Try not to compensate for the lower alcohol by having too many.

Good luck on your selection and we’ll be back before the Belmont Stakes.

An unappetizing Derby became more so with the late scratch of 3rd choice Hoppertunity. Toss in an undercard of stakes that are small in field size and offer limited value plays (at least to this eye) and you have a long, slow day betting Churchill. Find me at the Saratoga Racino on Friday and wagering from the Saratoga house on Saturday. Feel free to call but please, no calls 10 minutes to post looking for an exacta box or a show bet.
I can’t go past favorite California Chrome (5). He’s impressive both visually and by the numbers. He’s just faster than the competition and only needs a clean break to deliver the victory.
I tried finding some long prices to use with CC but the ones I found haven’t been training well or drew terrible post positions. Someone will clunk up from the back for 2nd or 3rd place catching those that got used up trying to win. I just don’t know who.
