Still Ranting About Saban’s decisions!

13 Dec

Saban’s decision to attempt a 57 yard FG on the last play of regulation will go down as the biggest gaffe in the history of college football.
Throw in that his Alabama team was undefeated, ranked #1 in the polls and seeking their 3rd straight National Championship and you realize the magnitude of his mistake!
What caused him to make this decision?
His kicker was a freshman who had made a 52 yard FG in high school.
What made Saban think he could make a 57 yard FG, under pressure in front of 87,000 hostile fans?
Did Saban forget the possibility of a return if the kick was short?
A great coach should have been thinking ahead!
Saban will never live this down.
This will be his legacy!

Thoughts on Alabama football coach Nick Saban….

5 Dec

We give coaches way too much credit for winning games, often forgetting the players who have to execute. Saturday, we witnessed a coach who is not getting enough credit for his team’s horrible defeat. I am of course, talking about Alabama football coach Nick Saban. Tide fans were ready to put his face on Mount Rushmore after he won his third consecutive national championship this year. But they can put away the chisel because the stupid decisions made Saturday can only be blamed on Saban. Failing to attempt a field goal on fourth and inches that would have put the Tide up two scores late in the fourth quarter is a mistake most coaches make only once. Saban certainly won’t make it again. Miss the kick (their kicker did suck on Saturday), Alabama has to play the make the same defensive plays to win the game when they failed to convert that 4th down attempt. Then, given one second on the clock at the end of regulation, Saban elects to try a 58 yard FG as opposed to going to overtime. Five minutes earlier he declines a 37 yard attempt to ice the game. The logic escapes me. And he justifiably gets it stuffed in his face when Auburn returns the missed FG for a winning TD as time expires. Two decisions that took AWAY the opportunity for Alabama players to execute and maybe win the game, get that title and put Saban’s face on Rushmore. Instead, he gets Idiot status for the week. This is Saban’s second time as Idiot as he won the award during the 2006 NFL season when he repeatedly denied he was taking the Alabama job (“I guess I have to say it. I’m not going to be the Alabama coach.”) and then ten days later took the job. I make him at least 50% to be somewhere else next season.
