The Manhattan

6 Jun

One of the classic cocktails is the Manhattan. The drink is usually mixed one part sweet vermouth, two parts whiskey, with a dash of bitters, with ice and a cherry garnish. A Perfect Manhattan uses one-half part of both dry and sweet vermouth. I like to add a touch of the cherry juice to the drink. Often one will use bourbon in place of whiskey.

I bring up the Manhattan because it is the unofficial drink of the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel in thoroughbred racing’s triple crown. The official drink is something called the Belmont Breeze but who has ever heard of it let alone tasted one? In this year’s Belmont (Saturday, 6:15 pm, NBC) I’ll Have Another attempts to complete the sweep of the triple crown and become the 12th horse to do so.

If you’re looking to upset the betting and sentimental favorite maybe Paynter goes to the lead and never looks back. Or if I’ll Have Another moves to the lead too early he gets caught late by the stretch running Dullahan. Whatever the outcome, I’ll be having another Manhattan at about 6:30. Good luck to all those who wager.
