Welcome to the First Installment of Distilled Thoughts

14 Mar

My name is Joe Notar. I am the owner/operator of Colonial Liquor. Located in the Marketplace Plaza in Honeoye Falls, NY, the store was established at its present location in 1976. I purchased it from the original owner in 2005. I am also a resident of Honeoye Falls, NY.

Published weekly, I hope to explain and discuss issues that are unique to the spirits business in New York State. Topics I will cover include state regulations, new wines, single malt scotches, and links to industry news. I welcome your comments, suggestions and questions, and will try to respond in a timely manner.

The liquor industry in New York is highly regulated and some other day I’ll explain why. A question that is often asked at the store is how do I decide our store hours. The State Liquor Authority (SLA) enforces the charter (as passed by both houses of the legislature) of the Alcohol Beverage Control and which governs opening and closing hours of all entities that sell alcohol. For liquor stores, hours of operation are between 8 am and midnight Monday-Saturday and noon-9pm on Sunday. We must be closed on December 25th. Each county is allowed to further restrict the hours of operation and Monroe County has established a closing time of 9pm for each night of the week.

Colonial Liquor maintains hours of 10 AM-9 PM Monday-Thursday, 9 am-9 pm Friday-Saturday and Noon-5 PM on Sunday. On Monday holidays we try to pair up with the local grocery, Honoeye Falls Marketplace and will close at 7 pm if they choose to do so.

More information can be found at http://www.sla.ny.gov/provisions-for-county-closing-hours

Thank you for reading and if you have a topic for discussion please send me a note.

Joe
